Mir Mehedi’s Pizza Burg Sells Over 4,000 Pizzas Daily
Every Bengali New Year, the weekend supplement Chutir Dine of leading Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo publishes special features highlighting promising young talents from different sectors. In the 1433 Bangla year edition, the publication has focused on seven inspiring youths who are making significant contributions in sports, music, acting, business, and research. Among them is young entrepreneur Mir Mehedi, the founder and chief executive officer of the popular fast-food chain Pizza Burg, which now sells more than 4,000 pizzas every day across Bangladesh.
Mir Mehedi’s entrepreneurial journey began during his student life. At the time, he was studying BBA at North South University while simultaneously working part-time at the call center of Grameenphone and tutoring students to support himself financially. By saving money from those jobs, he eventually gathered enough capital to launch his first food business with four friends in the Mirpur-7 area of Dhaka around 2015-16.
The small restaurant, named “Coffee Express,” initially served coffee, burgers, and other fast-food items. Within a short period, one of their signature items, the “Naga Burger,” gained massive popularity through food bloggers and social media exposure. The business generated nearly Tk 600,000 in profit during its very first month, an unexpected success for the young entrepreneurs.
However, the early financial success soon led to disagreements among the partners. Reflecting on that experience, Mehedi said money can bring both comfort and conflict in life. According to him, disputes arose over profit sharing, responsibilities, and working hours after the business started making substantial earnings. Feeling disappointed and betrayed, he eventually decided to leave the venture.
Despite the setback, Mehedi did not abandon his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Instead, he launched another restaurant business called “Pari Pasta” in Mirpur-2 with financial support from his father and uncle. Using the social media connections and customer network he had already built, the restaurant received a strong response from the beginning. On the very first day, sales reached nearly Tk 9,000, and within four days revenue crossed Tk 50,000.
Still, disagreements among stakeholders once again forced him to step away from the business in 2017. Later, Mehedi realized that building a successful business requires not only passion and investment but also proper leadership, long-term planning, and mutual understanding among partners.
The turning point in his life came in January 2018 when he launched PizzaBurg in Mirpur-2 with his father. The new restaurant was opened on the upper floor of the former Pari Pasta location. The startup investment amounted to Tk 3.3 million, including nearly Tk 1.8 million borrowed through loans. Despite financial pressure, the business became profitable within only four months.
From a single outlet in Mirpur, PizzaBurg has now transformed into one of the country’s rapidly expanding fast-food brands. The company currently operates 22 outlets across Bangladesh, including 12 branches in Dhaka and several others in cities such as Chattogram, Narayanganj, Cumilla, Rajshahi, Feni, Khulna, Mymensingh, Barishal, and Noakhali.
Today, nearly 1,000 employees work for the company, many of whom are young students and part-time workers. Alongside pizzas, the brand also sells burgers and various fast-food items, attracting thousands of customers daily. According to Mehedi, maintaining product quality and customer satisfaction has been one of the key reasons behind the company’s steady growth.
Interestingly, Mehedi admitted that he had no special culinary skills before entering the restaurant business. He said he had never even cooked rice in his life. He explained that at the time he entered the industry, restaurant businesses were becoming highly popular among young entrepreneurs, and he simply chose the sector that appeared most promising.
Like many businesses worldwide, PizzaBurg faced major uncertainty during the Covid-19 pandemic. When restaurants struggled to survive because of lockdowns and restrictions, the company adopted a different marketing strategy. Through social media campaigns, PizzaBurg announced that selected families staying at home during the pandemic would receive free pizzas every day.
The campaign quickly went viral online and attracted enormous public attention. Millions of people expressed interest in the offer. Selected customers received pizzas delivered to their homes without charge, while many others who missed the opportunity started placing regular orders. As customer demand surged unexpectedly, PizzaBurg had to introduce several cloud kitchens to handle the pressure.
According to Mehedi, the pandemic ultimately became the company’s biggest turning point. While many businesses suffered losses, PizzaBurg used digital engagement and online food delivery services to strengthen its market presence. The entrepreneur believes that understanding customer behavior and maintaining direct communication with consumers helped the company survive and grow during difficult times.
From the beginning, PizzaBurg focused heavily on customer relationships. The company regularly collects customer feedback, sends birthday greetings, and maintains active communication through social media platforms. As the business expanded, Mehedi formed a dedicated public relations team responsible for customer engagement and service improvement.
Looking ahead, Mehedi dreams of taking PizzaBurg beyond Bangladesh. One of his long-term ambitions is to open an outlet in New York’s Times Square. He believes business is more than just a source of income; for him, it is a passion. In his words, success eventually comes when work is done with sincerity, concentration, and genuine love.
Industry observers say Bangladesh’s food and restaurant sector has experienced significant growth over the past decade, particularly among young entrepreneurs. The rapid expansion of online food delivery platforms, social media marketing, and changing urban lifestyles have created new opportunities for restaurant brands. PizzaBurg is now considered one of the notable examples of how digital marketing, youth-driven entrepreneurship, and customer-focused strategies can transform a small local business into a nationally recognized brand.
